Juan Pablo González

Juan Pablo González received his B.A. in musicology from the Universidad de Chile and his Ph.D. in musicology from the University of California-Los Angeles. He was the founder and first president of the Chilean Society for Musicology (1996-2000) and the Latin American branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (2000-2006). He currently directs the Institute of Music of the Universidad Alberto Hurtado in Santiago. In addition, Dr. González serves on the faculty of the Institute of History of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, also in Santiago.
Professor González’s research focuses on 20th century popular music in Chile and Latin America, contributing to its understanding in socio-historical, socio-aesthetic, and analytical terms. He also conducts studies of art music in 20th century Chile, highlighting the relationship between vanguards and local vernaculars. Along with his many articles published in international scholarly journals and his regular contributions to the El Mercurio newspaper in Santiago, he is the coauthor of En busca de la música chilena [In Search of Chilean Music, 2005], of two volumes of Historia social de la música popular en Chile [Social History of Popular Music in Chile, 2005, 2009], and Cantus firmus: Mito y narrativa de la música chilena de arte del siglo XX [Cantus firmus: Myth and Narrative in Chilean Art Music of the 20th Century, 2011]. His latest book is Pensar la música desde América Latina: Problemas e interrogantes [Thinking about Music from a Latin American Perspective: Problems and Questions, 2013]. In 2003 he received the Casa de las Americas (Cuba) prize for musicology and in 2010 was awarded the Bicentennial Medal of the Chilean Council of Music, an organization affiliated with UNESCO’s International Council of Music.
